What is Scabies?
Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that burrow into the skin, causing intense itching and rash.
What Causes Scabies ?
It spreads through close contact or shared items like bedding and clothing. It can affect people of all ages.
Symptoms of Scabies :
- Severe itching, worse at night.
- Rash with Red bumps and blisters.
- Thin, irregular burrow tracks on the skin.
- Sores from scratching, sometimes infected.
- Scaly, crusty patches in severe cases.
- Common sites – fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, waist, knees, ankles, and genitals
Treatment of Scabies :
- Topical Medications – Prescription creams and lotions might help.
- Oral Medications – Oral medications are advised in severe cases.
- Relief – Antihistamines or steroid creams to reduce itching and inflammation.
- Cleaning – Thoroughly wash all clothing, bedding, and towels used by the infected person in hot water and dry them on a high heat setting. Seal Non-washable items for several days to kill any mites.
What Preventive Measures can be taken ?
- Treat all household members and close contacts simultaneously.
- Avoid physical contact with infected individuals, and do not share personal items
