What Are Keloid Scars?
A keloid scar is a thick, raised scar that can occur wherever you have a skin injury. While they can form on any part of the body, they are commonly found on earlobes, shoulders, cheeks, or the chest.
What are the Causes of Keloid Scars?
1. Increased Blood Flow : Keloids result from excessive blood flow to the skin surface during the healing process.
2. Risk Factors –

What Preventive Measures can be taken?
Good Wound Care –
- Keep wounds clean and moist.
- Gently wash the area with mild soap and water.
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline, Aquaphor) or other ointment.
What are it’s Effective Treatments?
• Pressure Dressings : These specialized dressings apply pressure to the scar, helping to prevent excessive scar tissue formation.
• Corticosteroid Injections : These injections can help flatten keloids and reduce redness.
• Surgical Excision : Surgical removal of the keloid, followed by post-operative treatments to prevent recurrence.
• Radiation Therapy : Used selectively for large or recurrent keloids.
• Cryotherapy : Freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen can shrink it.
