What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition causing white patches on the skin due to loss of melanin pigment. It affects all skin types but is more noticeable on darker skin tones.
What Causes Vitiligo?
Vitiligo occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin.
Genetic factors, sunburn, or emotional stress may trigger it.
Symptoms of Vitiligo :
- White patches on skin
- Premature whitening or greying of hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, or beard
- Loss of color in the mouth or nose tissues
- Retinal color changes (inner layer of eyeball)
Treatment of Vitiligo :
While incurable, treatments can improve the appearance –

• Phototherapy – Narrowband UVB therapy stimulates pigment production in the skin.
• Depigmentation – Creates a uniform appearance of the skin tone for widespread vitiligo.
